I just finished this and needed to discuss this book with someone so hi r/books! I listened to this book at work today and omg, so good! I haven’t read historical fiction in a long time, and typically I’ve steered away from the Revolutionary War but this was an excellent story. I’d heard about Deborah Samson before, a woman who disguised herself as a man and fought in the Revolutionary War, but Harmon’s telling of the story was absolutely riveting. Liberties taken of course because historical fiction, but I found it tasteful! I always am wary of romance in historical fiction…seductive scenes can come off as cringy to me in a historical setting (why is it so easy to miss the mark with dirty talk in a seventeen hundreds prose? Lol) Harmon did it well though imo. My heart broke at the final scene with Phineas. Understandable for the storyline but woof…stamp my heart on the floor why don’t ya. Has anyone else read this recently? Thoughts?
