Personally, I find it weird when people dislike the stuff I like. That’s not to say they can’t have opinions about it, I just don’t get it. *Why do they hate it? Did they pick something up that I missed?*

Therefore, I’m going to ask you guys what you think about this phenomenon. Humans can’t agree on anything, that much is clear. What is your favorite book that seems to get a lot of hate, but you just don’t get why? Also, on that note, what makes a book ‘good’ for you?

Please refrain from giving any unmarked spoilers.

I read just about anything, but I tend to criticise them by what they are trying to do. I will not criticise a popcorn book same as I would do for a book in the same genre that offers more depth, for example. I try to enjoy it for what it is.

My main question when reading is often “what is the author trying to do and how is it executed?”

That said, I do give some of my lower ratings if the writing is poor (not basic, but one that contains a lot of repetition of descriptions, run-on sentences etc), if the book gives a lot of rambles in the name of world building on things that do not matter, if the plot has inconsistencies and so on.

I like more concise books that have a clear focus on the story they like to tell, prose that matches the intended message, a plot that is well constructed without resulting in a lot of plotholes or vagueness. I also enjoy social commentary and well-executed messages, but again, if it is a popcorn book, I don’t necessarily judge the book based on that.
