It is reading week at my daughter’s school and they solicited parent in class reading sessions. I have a million choices for my 1st grade son that I think will go over well.
For my daughter’s class I am much less certain. They read bigger kid books, and I’m not sure what I should grab that can be read in 10 or so minutes without context and which will be exciting or fun.
I was considering the “Riddles in the Dark” chapter of the hobbit. Perhaps one of the Wit stories from Stormlight (Dog and the Dragon maybe?). How about the selection ceremony from the giver? It has been thirty years or so since I read it but I certainly remember it making an impression.
Can anyone think of a really memorable passages that are not too long that might go over well being read aloud to a 4th grade class???

Lois Lowry did an AMA here in /r/books [you might want to check it out](http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/3ab3fz/hi_reddit_i_am_lois_lowry_author_of_the_giver_ama/?) 🙂 . [Here’s a full list of our upcoming AMAs](http://www.reddit.com/r/books/wiki/amafullschedule)

No suggestions- just wanted to pop in and say how lucky your kids are to have a parent who cares so much, and wants to get their entire class excited about reading!
Tolkien’s a great choice. Lots of flowery, majestic descriptions of mountains and forests to pull from.
As for kids’ books, I remember growing up with the Deltora books. Lots of freaky monsters or beautiful scenes that should get their attention, all written *for* kids if they wanna read it themselves
