Trying to get out of my typical genres by reading some thrillers/mysteries this year. I’m looking for something with a twisty plot that keeps me guessing but isn’t overly gruesome. A murder mystery is great, but I don’t care for gratuitous horror. Specifically, I just read Pretty Girls and was grossed out by the torture while simultaneously bored by the plot. I haven’t read a ton of mysteries so feel free to recommend well-known ones! The more clever, the better.

    1. I’ve read a lot of thrillers, and The Silent Patient and Defending Jacob are among my favorites. Also, anything by Tana French.

The Spellman Files (humorous mystery, good twist, not gruesome.)

      Gone Girl

      Rock Paper Scissors

    3. “Stolen,” by Daniel Palmer. “The Trap,” by Melanie Raabe, “That’s Not My Name,” by Megan Lally

    4. The Silent Patient

      The Drowning Woman

      The Guest List

      The Whisper Man

      All The Dangerous Things

      Seconding Tana French books.

Whew. So good. Start with “*In the Woods*” – but I think “*The Likeness*” is the best. But they do “sort of” go together-ish. All of the books are very, very good. (these are the Irish police series); *The Secret Place* took me WAY TOO LONG to read.

The Searcher is also very interesting – stand alone. I was not sure what to expect, but I ended up quite liking it, too.

I am about halfway through Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” — never read this one before. It’s very interesting – her writing style takes a little getting used to, but it’s quite good. Intriguing.
