I’ve been reading James Boswell’s Edinburgh journals, which gives a brilliant portrait of life in the city in the eighteenth century. I’ve also read Boswell and Johnson’s tours, John Galt’s Annals of the parish, Fiona Houston’s Garden cottage diaries and Dorothy Wordsworth’s Tour of Scotland,1803.
Are there any other books which detail life in Scotland in the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, particularly the early part of the period. I’d be interested in travel accounts and diaries, but also in quality non-fiction history books that go into the period in depth, not just a short chapter per hundred years, if you know what i mean.
