I’m looking for a book that has a similar plot to the following: a ruthless gangster/villain is known for being the most hated and cruel person in the city. He doesn’t have to be the main character, he could be a secondary character where the actual MC follows. Eventually throughout the book, it slowly begins to build up that the gangster was actually a good guy, but due to traumatic events (where the reader begins to justify his actions), he turned into the life of crime and decided to go against everything (or even just specific people (government, social group, etc).
This might be too specific, but it was one of the stories that popped up in my head, and I just really wanted to experience it through great writing. Let me know if you guys got any recommendations, if there is even a book like that.
