I am looking for a historical fiction book that is similar to how the Assassin’s Creed video game series approaches a time period.
I want a action story with a character who is fictional but lives during a major time period, witnesses historical events happen (and may even be responsible those events), and meets meets important people of that time.
It does not necessarily need to be Assassins or stealth themed specifically.

Christian Cameron’s, the long war series, starting with Killer of Men. It’s about Arimnestos(a real person though) a boy in Greece who enters a shield wall, sold into slavery and becomes one of the most important soldiers in the Battle of Marathon…it’s literally assassins creed odyssey.
Tons of real people, explanations of shield walls, and ship battles, and real events.
Check out Shogun by James Clavell.
Or The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas.
