It’s such a great trilogy, I’m surprised it’s not talked about more. Derfel is an amazing pov, his friendship with Arthur and hostility with a certain character is a cool twist. I wish there was just one more book! What does the sub think, Is it Underrated or overrated? Also the audio book with Jonathan keeble is fantastic.

    1. Ive wanted to read these for a long time. I read the Saxon Tales (same author) and those quickly became some of my favorites. I love his writing style with lots of attention to detail but without overly wordy descriptions either.

    2. I’m just about to start the trilogy so I’m glad you like it. I know I like everything else I’ve read by Cornwell, including the *Saxon Stories / Last Kingdom* series and the *Sharpe* series. Those are more well known because they’ve been adapted as television shows.

    3. Yes I loved those books. I particularly enjoyed the depiction of Merlin, who is a complete bastard.

    4. If you enjoy Bernard Cornwell it’s a fantastic series. He does history better than just about anyone. Uhtred is a great character and a lot of actual history and true facts/people are woven in

An excellent series; I also thoroughly enjoyed it. Don’t waste your time with the TV adaptation, though.

      Read it years ago!
      It’s fantastic 🤩🤩

There’s a series adaptation, but haven’t seen it yet

It’s soooooo good, I don’t think I read the final book tho. I might reread through all of them

    8. Brilliant trilogy. It treats the Dark Ages like the Dark Ages, rather than a thousand years later. And it’s never clear if magic is real or not.

Yes, it’s one of my fave historical Arthur series, and just as good on a reread. I also love his Thomas of Hookton series: Thomas is an English longbow man during 100 years war between England and France.

    10. I really like it. The approach to magic makes it feel more alien in the way things set then should.

There are lots of great Arthurian books. I’m a big fan of the crystal cave trilogy. Once and future king trilogy is great too.

    11. The series that introduced me to Bernard Cornwell, it blew my tiny teenaged mind. Sadly have not heard good things about TV adaptation. At least the Sharpe films were good, Sean Beans greatest role.

    12. >Also the audio book with Jonathan keeble is fantastic.

Straight facts. My favorite narration performance of all time.

    13. Finished this trilogy near the beginning of the year, I absolutely loved it. All three books were amazing and I really liked the ending

I adore the Warlord Chronicles – one of my favorite series of all time and in my opinion the best retelling of Arthurian legend. Cornwell is always amazing but I think the characters and setting in this trilogy are his best work. I also love how he portrays the “magic” so that it’s up to the reader to decide whether it’s real or just preying on superstition. I was really looking forward to the tv adaptation but unfortunately it lacks all the depth of the books.

    15. Loved this trilogy. I’m not a huge fan of battle scenes in books but Cornwell does an amazing job with them, actually entertaining to read.

    16. I am currently on my 3rd replaced copy of the entire trilogy I’ve read them so many times. As well as having all 3 books as audiobooks so I can listen when on a long drive or doing dishes or working.

I absolutely adore these books and read them constantly, along with the camulod chronicles.
