I absolutely love the movie Hellraiser and horror in general, so I figured I’d give the book a shot and I was not disappointed.

Clive Barker has a great writing style. I am surprised to see he is not talked about as much as the likes of Stephen King, but nevertheless I will definitely be reading more of his books. His diction and foreshadowing are extremely fluid and nuanced, but not too sophisticated or hard to decipher for a casual reader like myself. The book struck a great balance between gory, squeam-inducting horror and anxious dread. It was very short (160 pages in large print), but it packed plenty of punch.

Overall I’d give it an 8.5/10, very enjoyable read. Basically felt like reading an adult version of a Goosebumps book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is into horror, and if you enjoyed the Hellraiser movie(s) you will like the book as the 1st movie followed the book very closely.
