When I was younger, I diligently read many of his books. I loved pretty much every single one of them. But there was something that always caught me just a little off guard, even as an adult. Behind all the magical journeys and performances and thrills, every book had some element there that just…..makes me feel strange. Like a bit of melancholy but endearing in a strange way.

Like when in Danny, champion of the World, about how he talked about his dad at the end of the book. Or in the witches when they were discussing what they were going to do with their remaining short lifespans. or in the BFG, or in Matilda, or whatever else. There was something both disarming and yet not alarming in all of these books that I cant quite consider. I wonder if its because in all these fantasies, there’s something very very real behind it but also portrayed in a very meaningful way. I heard that the author’s life was quite dark and there were a lot of stories written by it (I didn’t see any) and maybe there was sth happy and tragic he learned from all that and placed it in his books.
