Last year I read 282 books but they were mostly from a few main genres/sub genres I gravitate toward- thriller, dark academia, historical romance. A couple non fiction but not many and mostly related to those same main categories, like books about historical fashion. This year I’ve challenged myself for every “comfortable book” I read to read one book from a genre outside of my comfort zone. I’m thinking maybe young adult, fantasy, literary fiction, sci-fi, and lots of non fiction genres like science, true crime, or history. I would especially love ideas from lesser known and overlooked sub genres! Do you have any book recommendations from your favorite genres? Mostly I just want good books that represent their genre so I can see if I could get into something new. Thanks for any ideas!

I’m not a huge true crime reader, but I highly recommend giving In Cold Blood a shot if you haven’t yet

I’ve recently finished a fantasy series (that’s a bit dark and only barely fantastical) that follows the journey of different characters on their journeys through war and politics that I’d highly recommend:
The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie (9 books, 3 linked trilogies)
One of my favourite series for Historical Fiction series which is based in Victorian England and is written as the memoirs of a terrible British army officer but carefully woven into accurate historical events:
The Flashman Papers by George MacDonald Fraser (13 Chronological books)
