I’m looking for books that get right to the action within the first 50 pages. I’m having trouble starting books that begin with world building/exposition. World building that comes later is fine, but I need something to suck me in first.

    1. Martha Wells’ *Murderbot Diaries* series of sci-fi novellas. An ex-military cyborg hires out as security to humans at the edge of the galaxy. The first one is **All Systems Red.**

Blake Crouch’s **Dark Matter** is a sci-fi man-on-the-run thriller that revs up in the first few pages.

    2. If you like YA, Tamora Pierce.

I have the same issue as you and find I can’t get behind a lot of adult fantasy because it does this.

Also liked Leech by Hiron Ennes and What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher.

    3. Vonnegut’s the king of this. You’re safe with picking any, although I often recommend starting with Sirens of Titan or Cat’s Cradle, and saving Slaughterhouse-Five and Breakfast of Champions once you’ve read others.
