Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh and wow. I havent been this grossed out in a long time. Her prose is pointed and really brings images to my senses, so much do, that I had to put the book down multiple times.

I read Eileen and expected Lapvona to be similar. What I didn’t expect was the grotesque to be tenfold than in Eileen. I thought Eileen’s character was quite real and laughed at a few yuck-type descriptions. I’m no newbie to gross/dark situations, looking at you Faulkner, Steinbeck and Toni Morrison. But, wow. Moshfegh literally wrote this story in blood and feces.

I dislikes every character and expected something to happen to reel me back into the story. Nope. Not even cannibalism got me back. Finishing it became a chore and it sucked because I really wanted to like it. It’s well written, but the story and the characters made me go, meh.

So far, worst book of 2024 for me.

How’d you guys feel about it?

    1. I loved how bleak and sort of nonsensical it was. Like a modern fairy tale, without any sort of moral to the story. I was fascinated by Ina and I wished there was more. It was disgusting and maybe closer to was history might have been, aside from the fantastical bits. I wasn’t happy to read it, but I always was curious about what would happen next.
