i was introduced to shannon’s literature by “the priory of the orange tree”, which i immensely loved. the way she structured the world-building, characterizations, plot, and conflicts are a thing of magic. naturally, once “a day of fallen night” was released, I rushed to read that too and was in love with it as much as i was with its predecessor.
however, i’ve been toeing the line between giving her other series, the “bone season” a try. from what i’ve glimpsed it’s very different, and i would like to hear your thoughts about it. if you find it just as good, or even better, as her roots of chaos books.
(and i’d love to hear some other high fantasy recommendations!)

I’m actually reading The Bone Season at the moment! I haven’t read Priory yet but really want to, but have had Bone Season on my shelf for so long I thought I should start with this one.
I’m enjoying it, though finding it a little clunky in parts? But I think it’s probably just where it’s her first novel and she is finding her feet. It is definitely readable and makes me curious to read more of her work. But someone who has read both can probably advise further!
I would say to give it a try, though, and if it isn’t for you that’s okay too – it’s a very different sort of fantasy. But if you know you like her writing I think there’s no harm in giving it a go!
Not quite the same but you might also enjoy ‘A Natural History of Dragons’ by Marie Brennan, or potentially Robin Hobb’s books (my favourite fantasy series, though the style might be different)
