I have a twenty minute walk to work and I would love to listen to audiobooks instead of music…but I have auditory processing disorder. I find it very hard to listen to audiobooks because it can take a few seconds for me to understand what someone has said when the narrator is talking. I can barely watch tv/movies without subtitles. I’ve tried audiobooks before, but gave up after only a few of minutes when I realized I was only taking in about half the words and couldn’t follow the story.

I find it way easier when I can follow along with the text, but that’s not an option while I’m walking in NYC. I want to read more and the natural thing to do would to do it on the way to work after getting off the train (I read on the subway, but I live close enough to the end of the line that I always get a seat so I’m able to read a physical book).

    Anyone have any suggestions?

ETA: the only audiobooks I can listen to are the Stephen fry Harry Potter audiobooks, but that’s mostly because I’ve read and listened to them so much I have large parts of it memorized

    1. I haven’t been diagnosed but with my audhd I think I have it, what you describe sounds very familiar.

I do love audiobooks though. Nothing calms me the way they do. I know some people find it easier to listen when they speed it up. For me it’s the other way around : 0.9 is my usual speed. At the beginning of the book even 0.8 to catch the rhythm.

I cannot follow audiobooks at all but I can listen to podcasts really well – did you try that yet?
