Hey! Does anyone have recommendations for paranormal or haunted house stories that *don’t* involve a mentally unstable protagonist? I find the “they’re just crazy” explanation takes the horror out of the story.
So far I’ve read The Haunting on Hill House, The Stranger in the Attic, and I’m currently reading White Smoke – but they could be passed off as delusions and hallucinations. They’re not scratching that itch that a good paranormal movie scratches

Check out some [Darcy Coates](https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7734837.Darcy_Coate) titles, something might appeal
The Hollow Places, T. Kingfisher. Without spoiling too much, I would describe it loosely as a cross between Coraline and Disney’s Gravity Falls. Fair warning, this book made me crave coffee.
The Sun Down Motel by Simone St James
The House of a Hundred Whispers, by Graham Masterton
This House is Haunted, by John Boyne
My favourite was Haunted by James Herbert – I can’t remember the psyche of the main character David Ash is played with, but he is sane.
Everything Joe Hill and Grady Hendrix. Fav Joe Hill is Heart Shaped Box, and fav Hendrix is How to sell a Haunted House. The Invited by Jennifer McMahon is great also.
I believe the book pet cemetery by Stephen King meets these requirements.
If you’re into m/m romance with your haunted house, check out The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings by Lily Morton
The Little Stranger
Kill creek.
