    Imagine this:
You’re in a bookstore. You’ve picked up a book that looked intriguing. You start reading the overview/description. Then you see it, the one thing that makes you put the book back down. What is it?

For me it’s the word “secrets.” Such as “her secrets will catch up to her” or “as he unravels the secrets of his family” or “they’re not the only one with a secret.”

Idk what it is about the word where if I see it 9 times out of 10, I’ll put the book back down.

Any other phrase or synonym for it, I have no problem with. 😅

Words like cozy or heart-warming. No hate to anyone who likes books that are cozy and heart-warming, but I pretty exclusively want books that are NOT that lol. I don’t need it to be crazy disturbing either, but I don’t read to relax.

    2. Not sure if this fits, but I hate hate hate when a book has no overview, only a series of reviews from other people/publications. “3 stars from the Boston Globe”; “a real page turner”; “I couldn’t put it down”. Does anyone decide to read a book based on a random sampling of reviews printed on the cover?

The phrase “coming of age.” I have read so many books about coming of age that I’m done.
