I would really like to find another book like the Rum Diary by Hunter S Thompson. I like HST a lot but his later books all become a little too focused on the drugs and alcohol. I enjoy Rum Diary because it’s funny, has a lot of cultural observations, poetic prose, and isn’t too serious.
I also really enjoyed the Beach by Alex Garland, though its a little darker / edgier.
Any suggestions? I just want something fun to read, makes me think occasionally, but mostly takes me a way to a different place.
