In Shark Heart, the main character, Wren, finds out that her husband will be turning into a Great White Shark over the next year.
This feels like a ludicrous concept but after reading the book I feel like it one of best explorations of grief and loss that’s come out in recent years. Especially considering the unexpected (in my case) revelation about her mother.
But I’m wondering if this is an example of magical realism or something else?

From your description it sounds very much like magical realism to me.
I’d say so.
