I’ve recently realized I have a really hard time finding books I enjoy or that interest me, even with the dozens of large resources online.

I read tend to read exclusively non fiction. i’ve found on goodreads there are literally dozens of “parent” genres that actually seem like subgenres to me…for instance: “romatasy”, “ya fantasy”, “ya fiction”, “queer author”, etc.

these allow reads to cut right to the chase and get a cross section of books that cater to a specific individual.

in NF you get everything from books about butts, true crime, queer author, sociology, history, self help, business, guru….etc…

so i find myself wading through quite of a bit of stuff that is not interesting to me…and a list of TOP 50 NF books really only has 1 or 2 i might be interested in. additionally, i find that these lists are often biased towards things that don’t feel accolade worthy or relevant to what is important to me (i.e. about a funny subject (butts, queer author, celeb author). not to say those aren’t important to have, but i feel that it dilutes the pool of suggested books based on a criteria that isnt relevant to things i’m MORE interested in.

i don’t read a ton, and don’t spend a lot of time looking for books but would like to change that in 2024 (so original, i know). I feel like some forums or online resources that cater to NF reads would be very helpful. I’ve tried looking with no luck and getting some pro tips from all of you would be helpful to see if there is something simple like goodreads or amazing that caters toward NF and subcategories within. thanks!

I look at prizes for nonfiction a lot of the time. The Bancroft in history, for example, is for best academic, while the history Pulitzer is for best popular. The Guardian also publishes round-ups of “the best new nonfiction” with different articles for popular science, politics etc.

A little time in the library might help too, if you have one around. It’s great for browsing new nonfic and helpfully divided by number.
