I love urban fantasy like Butcher’s Dresden Files books or the Nightside books from Simon R. Green. I’d like to find books in that genre with strong female protagonists that aren’t romances. Like, some romance is totally fine, but I don’t want the romance to be the main thing driving the plot and character development.

    Any recs?

    1. The City we Became, NK Jemisin. Super fun urban fantasy! The characters are “avatars” of major cities, and specifically the main characters are avatars of the NYC boroughs – most of which are women.

Kate Daniels series (I didn’t love the first one, but it grew on me). The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire. They do all have romance subplots, but I’m still hunting for female protag urban fantasy with minimal/no romance. They are surprisingly hard to find.

    3. Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning. I never got past book 5 in the series, but I couldn’t put down the first few. There’s a lot of romance, but it’s not the primary plot.

    4. I would recommend Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (and it’s sequel Hell Bent). Basically it is about a girl who is admitted to Yale and discovers that there is a secret society on campus that deals with arcane arts and the occult. Oh, and the main character, she can see and talk to ghosts.

It’s not YA like Bardugo’s other works (like Shadow and Bone).
