I feel like my reading in 2023 was mostly limited to mysteries and thrillers. Don’t get me wrong, I like reading those, but I want to read other genres too. I have these periods where I binge read one or several mysteries in a week and am left feeling like I can’t remember what I read a few days later. Mysteries and thrillers kind of seem like junk food for my brain. Help me with some books to help take a healthy break from them. Perhaps something gripping that is in any other genre (apart from high fantasy). Or something to help my brain slow down and actually appreciate good writing. Or something with a unique format that can help me branch out. Genres I typically enjoy are literary, historical, classics, contemporary, sci-fi, lighter fantasy. Some non-mystery reads I’ve enjoyed relatively recently are:
Talking It Over by Julian Barnes – I liked the different perspectives and getting in the heads of all the characters.
Cackle by Rachel Harrison – I liked the fantasy element, the cozy world and the likeable characters.
If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha – Loved how the different women’s stories intersect.
