Recently read the Swamp by Michael Grunewald (a journalist) and now reading Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser (I don’t believe she’s a trained historian). They’re both exciting and written in an engaging style. I majored in history and the formula for monographs is a little off putting to me now. I want something based on research and primary sources but written in an entertaining style. Any recommendations?

I just finished You Never Forget Your First: A Biography of George Washington by Alexis Coe. History holds up but it’s engaging and easy to read.
