The only book that I’ve ever read with this theme was one that was popularized through TikTok (I wish my mom died). And I’ve been meaning to find more books just like it.
Also, bonus points if it’s set in the medieval era or if they have an old fashion feel to them.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
The Devil all the Time. Donald Ray Pollock…
I would recommend *The Faraway Nearby* by Rebecca Solnit. It’s a long, lyrical essay/memoir unpacking her feelings regarding growing up with a socially parasitical mother who ends up with Alzheimer’s disease. She touches upon many subjects, such as art, empathy, and ownership over personal narrative.
*The Burning Light* of Two Stars by Laura Davis is another one to look at, but it’s a *very* heavy read.
For fiction, if you are looking for something there:
*The Poisonwood Bible* by Barbara Kingsolver is set in the late fifties and follows a missionary family’s journey to the Congo. It deals with subjects of religion, cultural ignorance, and racism. The story narratives transition between the viewpoints of the four daughters.
Not Wanted on the Voyage by Timothy Findley is as old-timey as possible but with a modern twist. It is about Noah and the Arc but touches upon subjects such as sexism, sexual binaries, and family trauma.
