    1. The Case Of The Toxic Spell Dump by Harry Turtledove is set in an alternate 1980s where magic exists so humanity never really developed much technology. Due to the author’s inclination this world looks almost exactly like our world, with people commuting to work on flying carpets and NASA using magical birds to explore space. It’s a ridiculous premise but a good read with a decent mystery to it.

    2. For Wolves ordering pizza, you want The Others by Anne Bishop, beginning with *Written in Red* – about a woman with prophetic blood who escapes from slavery and seeks shelter among the world’s dominant predators, who tend to classify humans as either “meat” or “useful meat”; Bishop is known for her unique blend of extremely dark subject matter and incredibly wholesome character dynamics.

(but seriously, last month I re-read the entire series in the span of two weeks; pizza comes up so often I had to go and buy pizza *twice* to deal with the cravings it gave me)

      *Other recommendations:*

Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series, beginning with *Rosemary and Rue* – about a half-fae detective/knight errant who keeps getting caught up in supernatural mysteries while having to navigate the complexities of modern fae politics.

Also by McGuire, the InCryptid series beginning with *Discount Armageddon* – about the latest generation of a family that left an ancient order of ‘monster’ hunters in order to become ‘monster’ anthropologists/conservationists; The series changes POV characters every few books, which helps keep it feeling fresh.

Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series, beginning with *Skinwalker* – about a shapeshifting rogue vampire hunter who shares her body with the soul of a panther.

Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin, beginning with *Spider’s Bite* – about an assassin with a heart of gold and stone/ice elemental powers, and her vendetta against the fire elemental mob boss who murdered her family

Genevieve Iseult Eldredge’s Circuit Fae series, beginning with *Moribund* (YA) – about an ordinary high school student™ who discovers that she’s a sleeper princess of the fair fae, and teams up with the princess of the dark fae in order to fight the cybernetic wild hunt

Rachel Aaron’s *Minimum Wage Magic*, first book of the DFZ – about a freelance mage in a living city who makes ends meet as a municipal contractor that cleans out abandoned property and sells anything of value.
