Hello,
It’s been a while since I was a kid and I need your help!
I am looking for books that meet the following criteria:
* Target audience: kindergarten
* Have illustrations / pictures
* Only the best – books considered to be great due to their story, characters, artwork etc.
* Length: Preferably not too long, so it can be read in one sitting (Optional)
* Example: Winnie The Pooh
Thanks 🙂

Robert Munsch – The Paperbag Princess
Julia Donaldson – The Gruffalo
Maurice Sendak – Where the Wild Things Are
I don’t know if this is the “best ever”, but it was a favorite of my mom: mother of 4, prior used bookstore manager and pre-K through elementary teacher. She’s read them all, basically (not literally of course 😊).
“The Cat at Night” by Dahlov Ipcar. Beautiful illustration. Very, very short.
Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola
Love Shaun Tan stuff
Anything by Jan Brett. Good stories, and her illustrations are second to none. Kids enjoy the story as it’s told, but they can also hunt for the little hedgehog on each page (or similar–they’re not all hedgehogs).
The Grufallo by Julia Donaldson is the greatest kids book and its not even close.
The second best is The Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman.
Source: have several kids
Maybe too long but there’s a version of the Secret Garden rewritten as a children’s book. It’s significantly abridged and has some truly gorgeous illustrations.
Arnold Lobel – frog and toad
Anything by Jon Klassen, like I Want My Hat Back.
