I’m 25 and I’ve always had a hard time reading as a kid. I’ve never read/finished a book. The only time I got close was when I was around 18-20 with the book Holes. I got to the “last hole” chapter and then I had to move and I ended never finishing the book. It always feels like a chore when I try to read. Fast forward a year and I have an idea to write a book. I told my friends about my book idea and He said “ Dude you have to read a book before you write a book” adding that reading a book would help me learn how to write a book. Which I totally 100% agree with. So I stopped writing my book and made myself read recently. I grabbed a book from my bookshelf that is called The Hunger Games! Within months I read a little and put it down and get discouraged as it remained a chore and was quite difficult. I kept reading little bits at a time here and there mostly forcing myself when I had some time and wanted to read it. Within the past few days I’ve been reading a lot more than usual. I’m at the part of the book where the character development is already established. The plot of the book is known by far. It’s already at the point where it’s been action packed and the games have already begun. Now in two days I’ve read over a hundred pages and many chapters. I’ve been trying to get the “pop up” or the “movie like images in my head” but having a little trouble some times I get the pop up somewhat most times I don’t. I have less than a quarter to go from finishing my first book! It’s exciting to say the least I’ve been so involved in this story that all I want to do is finish this book! I’m actually starting to love reading. As it’s my first book I know it comes within time and practice but I’m trying to gain the confidence and ability to actually visualize the story. I really really want that “pop up” while reading I want it to be like a movie in my head like everyone around me says it happens for them! I’m curious on what helped you with this and what are some tips or suggestions I can use to help me visualize the story better?
