I am specifically interested in a series where witchcraft more or less resembles what some people do today. I have seen many recommendations, but the caveat is that I am specifically searching for a male main character, preferably one that is seen to have a strong magical lineage, or a preternatural birth.
I have seen few suggestions of books about witches that have a male protagonist, and the ones that I have seen include elements that I dislike. For instance, I am not looking for a series with strong romantic overtones, so while I do not mind reading a gay protagonist, I fear that the a story that goes out of its way to establish the sexuality of a main character will include strong romantic overtones to the plot, or plot points that relate to social tension regarding sexuality.
Now, I do not think that there is anything wrong with plot points about social tension regarding identity, it is just not what I am interested in reading right now. An example of a book about witches that I enjoyed who had a male (gay!) protagonist is “The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself”. I would like something similar, but with a more subtle and grounded system of magic.
Really specific reqs I know. The reason I discuss the sexuality of the main character so much is because I am trying to preclude a segment of books that I have already seen recommended.
Thanks in advance
