So I was going back and reading Sharp Objects (and rewatched the TV show) and they’re both amazing.
While I was reading and watching it, I started to feel bad for >!Amma.!< I can’t believe this has to be said but I’m obviously not excusing their actions.
I kind of get how she rationalizes what Adora does to her and why she lashed out at anyone who got her attention. She’s made an unspoken contract with Adora, >!”You get to Take Care of Me™ and in return I get your undivided love and attention”,!< and what she says to Camille– something along the lines of “They think they’re doing it to you, but you’re really doing it to them”.
I feel sorry for her and I understand why she would get so enraged by Adora giving attention to the two girls. “Why should they get her love when they haven’t done anything? I have to be sick and constantly in pain to earn Adora’s attention and affection but they don’t. Why should they get anything?”
And I know the Calhoun Day play scene was supposed to exemplify her need to be the center of attention >!(as well as her needing reassurance to know if Camille would be sad if anything happened to her, but ONLY her!< and frame it as a bad thing, but honestly if I was excited about having a major role in a play and my sibling didn’t watch it at ALL, I would be upset too. 😂
Am I too soft lmao people ask me how could I feel bad for a >!murderer,!< and I can even feel sympathy for Adora, albeit to a much, much lesser degree.
