Hey all,
What are your suggestions for Southern Gothic tales? I’ve read everything from Cormac McCarthy and Flannery O’Connor for the more “literary” stuff, and I’ve read Michael McDowell, Cherie Priest, and Grady Hendrix.
Basically, I’m looking for any horror, gothic, or disturbing fiction set anywhere from Appalachia to the Deep South to the Southwest.
Thanks!

The Revelator by Daryl Gregory is good. I liked Spoonbenders better, but The Revelator is definitely entertaining.
Highly recommend House of Cotton by Monica Brashears!
Twilight by William Gay, The Gospel Singer by Harry Crews.
Mexican Gothic
I did not like it at all but you might. Check it out.
two by Lee Smith: family linen and black mountain breakdown.
Kentucky Strait – Chris Offut
Suttree – Cormac McCarthy
Close Range: Wyoming Stories – Annie Proulx (wrong geography but right vibe)
Glad you have experienced O’Connor and McCarthy, I am working to read all their works as well, and have gotten a good bit of progress this year (seven novels). William Faulkner should be the next author you approach! I’d also recommend a few standalone novels:
* *The Power and the Glory*, Greene
* *In Cold Blood*, Capote (nonfic)
Bastard Out of Carolina – Dorthy Allison
