She’s famous for “Anne of Green Gables”, but that was written in her early years and there is so much more to her. I find her later books and many short stories incredibly brilliant. “Emily of New Moon” and “Emily’s Quest” (“Emily Climbs” too, the whole Emily Trilogy actually) and the later Anne books like “Rainbow Valley” and “Rilla of Ingleside” are my favorites. “A Tangled Web” was fascinating (note: it is a dated book so watch out for some upsetting and triggering language in a few places. Please look this up before reading. But the story in itself is magnificent.)

Unlike “Anne of Green Gables” which is a cheerful work with thinly drawn characters, her later books show great humour, depth of insight and beautifully written characters.

I grew up reading these and thinking of them makes my heart ache for some reason. The plots may have been sometimes cliched (orphaned girl learns to fit in in a new place) but these were some truly great books. I wish they were more greatly appreciated.

I remember many days in my childhood when I kept gazing at the book covers. There were some lovely book covers on the books I was fortunate enough to read then. Something about these covers still tugs at my heart.

I cannot explain the feelings I have connected to these books and even their covers. Perhaps writing this post is my way of sharing this painful yearning feeling with you all.

I am glad I got to read these.
