    Hello all. I’m looking for suggestions on books that teach on discrete areas of “scientific” fields. Actually, probably any STEM related topic would be good. (And even more broadly, just about anything that takes the research seriously.) The more it actually gets into the studies/mechanics/knowledge behind the conclusions, the better. Books that show how the field has developed over time are great too.

    What I am NOT looking for is what I consider “edu-tainment” books. (Examples below.) There’s nothing wrong with them, it’s just not what I am interested in.

    **Books I have really enjoyed:**

    * *How Life Works – Philip Ball.*

    * *The Master and His Emissary.* The first part of this book specifically, which deals with all the studies on the hemispheres of the brain, was fantastic.

    * *Chaos – James Gleick.* I’m only part way into this book at the moment, but it’s a great look at chaos theory.

    **Edu-tainment** Again, it’s not that these are bad, but they seem to be more focused on the entertainment aspect as opposed to the learning aspect.

    * *Stiff – Mary Roach*

    * *Stuff Matters – Mark Miodownik*

    * *Land – Simon Winchester*

    Thanks all!
