Been thinking about this a lot recently since the novel for a currently ongoing tv series ends in such a manner. The protagonist will essentially redo his life after the book ends and the everything we read so far will be undone. We will not be seeing what actually happens though. **Please, do not name the book/series if you know what I’m referring to.**
Similarly, in >!the Darren Shan saga!<, the protagonist goes back in time and stops himself from accepting the call to adventure. This also goes against lore established by the story as critical points in history can never be altered.
There’s a lot more fantasy stories(especially in the webnovel area) that end with a “I’m so strong now that I’m going to the past and making sure none of these atrocities ever happen”, and while that’s a cool emotion it completely taints the entire series.
I understand that all fiction is just a lie and none of those stories ever happened. However, the author explicitly saying “yeah, I was just bullshitting you” is such a massive slap in the face.
Would love to get some opinions on how other people see this trope.
