I very much enjoy the concept of superheroes and villains in a contemporary setting, but only if we get to see both sides of the struggle or if the story is told from the villain’s POV. When things aren’t black and white, when not all heroes are good and not all villains are evil, when every character has a story and their own reasons for playing the game. Bonus points for romance and cool and diverse superpowers.
Some examples I can think of:
* Worm web serial by Wildbow– Probably the best I have read with in-depth worldbuilding, fleshed-out characters, and the most unique and detailed superpowers
* The Reckoners by Brandon Sanderson
* Fallen Hero: Rebirth & Fallen Hero: Retribution interactive novels by Malin Rydén
