The Internationalists by Oona Hathaway and Scott Shapiro review – the plan to outlaw war
A sparkling account of how a colourful cast of lawyers and jurists changed the world order by striving to consign conflict to history

    2. I did read Black Flags (if it’s the book about ISIS) and these are my favorite nonfiction books about political history.

*The Autobiography of Malcolm X* by Malcolm X & Alex Haley: if you grew up white in a predominantly white city, you may not have been given much education on MLK’s counterpart, Malcolm X. I always just heard about how he advocated for violence, but the autobiography explains where this thinking came from, and what the thoughts were behind Black Nationalism and how his thinking matured with him.

*Say Nothing* by Patrick Radden Keefe: as an American, the only thing I really grew up knowing about the Troubles was that they had something to do with car bombs. This book really tries to cover the whole 30-plus-year history of the Troubles by centering it on how innocent people got caught up in the crossfire between the IRA and the pro-England loyalists.

*Poverty, by America* by Matthew Desmond: if you didn’t grow up in the US or grew up here but were always upper-middle class or better, this book will explain the root cause of the current civil unrest and why half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. If you grew up in the US as middle class or poorer, everything in this book will make you say “duh.”
