I just finished this book, and I really enjoyed the world and dynamics of the spores in the world.

I also really did imagine the entire thing as a Ghibli film just from the colorful visuals and feel good vibe.

But, there are faults. I really didn’t like how Sanderson had double or triple metaphors and tried to go philosophical on some topics that just didn’t need to be. There was even a short bit about writing style, for word of choice!

** Spoiler beyond this point **

    ——–

The ending. The ending. The ending. I was so disappointed. The entire story I had thought the tablet Fort had was a “magical tablet” maybe stone or something…like an old ancient relic.

I also would have thought maybe the Scorceress had total mastery of the spores, she was using the midnight spores to listen and spy etc.

But nope…she had a laptop, tablets akin to iPad and Forts tablet was a “mind reading iPad tablet”?

It just threw everything off and the entire image was destroyed. I know there were other worlds inhabited, that’s where some characters came from..but all of them were magical in someway, then suddenly electronics came in out of nowhere? It feels a bit lazy..

Hold, the narrator – was he always narrating? Because he somehow knew thoughts and things happening even when he wasn’t there. He would go on about “irony” (another pseudo-philosophical interruption) to just say that I, the reader, will see what’s to come in relation…so the story is being told in past tense (which the tense is present) but he (Hoid) then knows the future?

Anyways – I think it’s a great story in the first 75%, but the rest, as stated feels rushed and out of place from the rest of the book.

But still, I did enjoy the read! And it was my first of 2024 🙂
