I’ve been reading a lot of Fitzcarraldo stuff and it’s given me such a good sense of what is cutting edge right now. They usually publish a lot of translated stuff, from books that have been shortlisted for the Booker to books that become sleeper hits, not to mention all the Nobel prizes winners they have grabbed before they actually won the prize. I trust them as much as I trust the Booker awards and so far they haven’t let me down.
Essentially, what I’m looking for is other publishers that really have their finger on the pulse of quality contemporary lit. The publishers dont have to focus on translated lit but it can be nice. Fitzcarraldo doesn’t do much East Asian translated lit so places that pick up on those weaknesses could be nice. That said, I won’t turn down an American-only publisher if it means good reads! What are your favorites?
