I’m about 75% of the way through this book, and the longer it goes, the more distasteful it feels. At one point, the moral of one of the stories is genuinely “this person is happy with nothing because they choose to be happy”. Ma’am, your setting is a concentration camp. Just smiling away the depression is not a very valid solution. Time and time again, I wonder if it’s genuinely offensive or just tonedeaf.

I’m listening to the audio book and if it weren’t for the narrator, I don’t think I’d be finishing it at all. I’m not smart enough to start a super nuanced conversation about it, but I would love to hear other opinions. I would also love to hear any recommendations about the Holocaust that aren’t so…flowery? I am going to read Night by Elie Wiesel after this. I’ve seen people recommend The Tattooist of Auschwitz and as I get farther in Storyteller, I think I’ll have to pass.
