I would like to learn more about the ancient world but I’m not sure where to start. I am looking for something that is more than just a dry history book: I would like to learn about the culture, how ordinary people lived back then, about art and religion. I am curious about any region, it can be about Rome, Greece, Egypt, anything.

An Indigenous People’s History of the United States. Not ancient but very interesting and thought provoking. Also, “A People’s history of the world: from the Stone Age to the new millennium” by Chris Hartman was very good
Oh here’s one for you: 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed by Eric Cline. About the Late Bronze Age Collapse, but it starts centuries earlier and discusses eastern Mediterranean life and trade and such in the lead-up.
