I have memories of great scenes in the Left Behind series that I read back when I was religious. I find myself now hoping for a similar series with the elements I enjoyed:
(In order of descending priority)
– Following the apocalypse itself, not really *post*-apocalyptic. Bonus points if it starts early, when “everything seems fine”. Tracks the development of the collapse.
– Political, following the ways factions develop and interact
– Present-day or near-future. Sci-fi is fine but not preferred.
– Ensemble, following interweaving character storylines.
– Gritty, with a sense of realism.
– Long!
