My wife has read this book and the Martian twice. She loves it and has been trying to get me to read it for over a year.
It’s very difficult for me to get into novels unless I already have a love for the source. I’ve read things like the Harry Potter series, Hunger Games, Slaughter-House Five, Cats Cradle, several Star Wars High Republic, and Resident Evil and Doom books.
It took me about 2 months to finish (I only read on the toilet or downtime at work).
Overall I really enjoyed it.
Didn’t know what to expect. I’ve seen the Martian movie so I expected it to be mostly about a guy stuck in space.
With Rocky introduced it completely changed what I expected from the book. It turned it into kind of a fun extraterrestrial science buddy book.
The flashbacks were an interesting lens into Grace’s past and how it usually is during a moment he needs to remember things on the ship.
I’m awful at math and while I didn’t fully understand a lot of the science jargon I appreciate the visualizations to give me an idea of what’s going on.
The only gripe I had was the ending. I kind of wished he made it back to Earth to see how everything turned out but I’m glad it’s a somewhat happy ending for all.
