I’ve been a huge film buff for the past 13 years. For some reason, it is the artistic medium that resonates with me the most. I think it has something to do with the fact that movies can convey ideas and emotions that cannot be simply described with words. This is true for the two best movies I’ve ever watched: 2001 A Space Odyssey & Mulholland Dr.

Anyways, a couple of years ago I got into reading (after reading Sapiens). I enjoy it quite a bit, even though I can’t seem to read more than 5 books a year. It is a different medium than film, more introspective (and demanding, since you can spend literally weeks reading a book before finishing it).

I have always thought than movies adapted from books could ‘ruin’ the book for me (since I am already all-too familiar with the story and themes). However, last year I did something new: I watched a movie adaptation of a book that I’d loved. It was Drive My Car. In a way, the director elevated the story, made it more rich and really took advantage of the visual medium to create a slightly different (yet amazing experience).

But what about reading the book AFTER watching the movie? I’ve been thinking about this for a while. Some of the books I’m interested are: No Country for Old Men, Killers of the Flower Moon. Thing is, I enjoyed these movies so much that I feel like the book will inevitably be a let down. Of course, this is mere speculation as I haven’t done it. But I’m curious, what are your experiences reading the book after watching the movie?
