In your opinion, who is the best literary villain, not just antagonist? I’m not sure how to best explain what I mean, but for me the first easy comparison that comes to mind is Umbridge vs Voldemort. I think Umbridge is a phenomenal antagonist, but when I think villain, Voldemort more readily comes to mind and better fits that archetype.
I’m not sure who I’d peg as the best villain I’ve ever read, so I’m curious what you guys think? Is there a difference between antagonist and villain in your eyes? What launches a character from one category to the next? And which character embodies the most villainous traits?
