I can understand that in 1959 this may have been a frightening book, but at this point we’ve seen the writing on the walls, knocking on the doors, voices calling you (sometimes in your own head), etc. a thousand times. Nothing about this book was remotely scary, although the whole thing had an unsettling tone, mostly due to the characters acting relatively bizarre throughout. Are people still finding this book to be frightening nowadays?

I’m just disappointed as I picked this up for a Halloween read after seeing some rave reviews about it. It wasn’t a terrible book, but since it seems to be written as a horror book, it feels like it fell very short of being any good and thus feels like a waste of my precious spooky season reading time!

I had a disappointing time with it, I think because of wrong expectations. I went into it after seeing it put on “scariest books of all time lists” or something similar.

I think I would have appreciated it more if I went into it thinking about character work or something else. It’s been years since I’ve read it so I may reread at some point, with a different view going in.
