I have been seeing a lot of love for alternatives to Goodreads. Which I’m on board, actually.

In looking for a suitable replacement, I found Bookshelf app (it has an awful name… Makes it so hard to find. It added “your virtual Library” to the end to ease it, but still…) and it became my favourite.

I’ve tried others, including the popular StoryGraph, but this one just hit that sweet spot of simplicity in just keeping a book journal.

I rarely see it on those “top alternatives to Goodreads” articles and discussions, so I decided to help out. I’m in no way affiliated with it, but wanted to spread the word.

However, all of these apps have one very big problem in common: they’re usually developed by very small teams. I remember StoryGraph being a two person job. The same for this one. I also saw recommendations for one called Hardcover, which is a solo venture, I think.

It’s very hard to compete with Goodreads when you’re so underpowered. Probably this means most of these apps will soon die.

Anyhow, these are my two cents. Feel free to add here your 2024 thoughts on the eternal “alternatives to Goodreads” discussion.
