There’s a children’s book read in class when I was 12 called something like, “A Long Way Home,” and I remember noticing that it was published sometime in the mid century. It was about three siblings who were left by their parents at a motel on vacation, who then decide to run away from the concerned hotel staff and make the journey home on foot. I remember the oldest girl was insecure about her weight and liked riding horses because they made her feel like she could move gracefully. The middle boy wore glasses and there was a scene at the beginning where he cleaned them at the sink with a Kleenex, and there was also a scene where the eldest daughter bought some food, including some cans of Vienna sausage, and was surprised at how much everything costed. I remember being so absorbed in this story in 6th grade but I can’t find it anywhere for the life of me – it probably doesn’t help that there the book was super rare when I read it a decade ago, as I remember my teacher showed us the one listing on Amazon for a used copy for like $120. There were a ton of books with similar titles, but nothing that matched when I scourged the internet as best I could. Anyone have any ideas? I think the cover had a pale green background.
