I thought the ending was dark, in the sense that Julia was giving into violent doublethink by accepting the terms, such as to throw sulphuric acid in a child’s face, despite her initial adverse reaction to them.However, I do agree that it seemed feverish, hopeful and devoid of Orwell’s darkness. I was expecting it to end with the thought police denouncing her for initially saying no to throwing sulphuric acid in a child’s face to show the inescapable power of the totalitarian regime.
