I recently read Amy Taylor’s ‘Search History’ and absolutely loved it – the story of a flawed antiheroine interacting toxically with a seemingly “perfect” love interest. I would say Gillian Flynn’s books give a similar feeling, and I also like classical gothic “romances” too (though the unacknowledged abuses can feel exhausting without payback / catharsis).
Daphne Du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’ is one of my favourite books, as I find the gothic elements of the book gel really well with my own real experiences of insecurity, idolisation and romanticism. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a similar book or a modern twist on that theme?

The Thirteenth Tale
Ooh, you gotta read The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters! Gothic and spooky and so sumptuous and feminist. I love Rebecca, I’m gonna have to check out Search History.
Rebecca is one of my favorites! You might have read it already but I found Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte to be similar. Jane was very relatable to me and there is payback. Those two are probably my favorite books!
