I’m in med school and interviewing for residency, and although I’m fairly well-read, I need books that I could recommend to an interviewer // could read to impress someone before an interview! (Both medical and non medical. Program directors notoriously love books outside the scope of medicine!)

Note: I will take these seriously and actually read them 🙂

Edit: I realize this may seem like an odd ask. But faculty appreciate everything from philosophy, interesting fiction, politics, etc.

If you are in med school and haven’t read:

      How We Die

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

      Hidden Valley Road

      Emperor of All Maladies

      Empire of Pain

      Diving Bell and the Butterfly

      Autobiography of a Face

      A Heart that Works

When the Air Hits Your Brain

I would say all of them are required reading.

Some fiction that has medical mental health that be good to be well read in:

Demon Copperhead (good companion to Empire of Pain)

Sorrow and Bliss (mental health diagnosis and issues)

Chouette (pregnancy and special needs child metaphor)

      Elena Knows (chronic pain)

Wonder by Emma Donoghue (family dynamics and illness)

      Shuggie Bain (alcoholism)

      Yellow Wallpaper (decent into madness)

Not at all familar with your process but I suggest read something that is opposite of what they would stereotype you as. Ex if you are male read about feminism if you are female read about male rights. Read about LGBTQ+ community, if you dont know about their struggles, etc. Basically socital disparities, just something that shows you would be open to grow beyond just education-wise.

    3. I personally LOVED, the lost Art of Healing and “white coat, becoming a doctor at Harvard Medical School.”

I would recommend When Breath Becomes Air and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

      Good luck

    5. I would suggest Presence by Amy Cuddy. It’s all about how to project confidence. It offers some great ways to prepare for interviews/high stress situations. I’m not a doctor, but I have to talk to clients all the time about different things. This book helped me TREMENDOUSLY!!

The Ghost Map was fascinating. It really painted the picture that you gloss over in history books.
