Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World were my favorite books growing up. I finally got around to reading ‘Never Let Me Go’ by Kazuo Ishiguro and, oh boy, it gave me that nostalgic feeling I got from reading 451 for the first time — not knowing exactly what’s going on but having an undercurrent of unease surrounding mundane descriptions of day-to-day life, and trying to figure out how it all fits together in relation to the world they’re living in. I loved Ishiguro’s style, the world-building and suspense. The writing was phenomenal, the characters and setting felt real.

It also reminded me a lot of the anime From the New World, which I loved, if you’ve seen it. Kids growing up in a dystopian world. The theme is similar to Promised Neverland too, which I also enjoyed but didn’t find the writing and storytelling as good

I’m not the biggest fan of action, but don’t mind a bit of it as long it’s not central to the plot. I definitely don’t mind books where there doesn’t seem to be a lot going on, but there’s something ominous lurking just beneath the surface.

(Other dystopians I loved include The Giver, The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984, The City of Ember)

Sorry if this is too vague, I’d love to hear any recommendations for dystopian novels. Or psychological thrillers too, really I’m just looking for that feeling that there’s something very wrong, and turning the pages in anticipation of finding out what’s really going on.
